I ran out of time to write reviews… There’s still going be three more Chiba posts, but I need take a break now. I’ll get back to it as soon as I have time, but I don’t know when that will be.
Finally time for us mortals to catch up on all the awesome stuff you’ve been watching during the past years. 🙂
Take care, wherever you are.
Gonna watch a couple of Japanese movies during the next week (Fantasy Filmfest in Germany): Miike’s “Yakuza Apocalypse”, “Parasyte (Part I)” and “World of Kanako”. There’s more, of course, but these are the Japanese flicks they got.
I was a bit disappointed in Yakuza Apocalypse. It’s not a bad movie, but it’s at least 30 minutes too long and kinda feels like a Miike-lite. Miike has done the same kind of stuff much better before. But, it did have its moments, especially with Kaeru-kun (Masanori Mimoto).
A really poor year for Japanese cinema so far. Lots of disappointments, like Shinjuku Swan (Sono’s weakest film), Torakage (Nishimura’s weakest film), and That’s It (great start, but it loses it steam and finally turns into a lame CGI mess), Misono Universe (not bad, but still among Yamashita’s weakest), a couple of pretty good ones like Tag, Love & Peace, and Makeup Room, and only one really good one (Luv Ya Hun / Watashitachi no haahaa).
2014 was a pretty good year, no matter what others say. Love’s Whirlpool, My Man, Kabukicho Love Hotel, Gun Woman, Tokyo Tribe, Girl’s Blood, Fires on the Plain, Aru hi mori no naka… and it gets even better if you include 2013 films that hit the theaters / local festivals in 2014: Number 10 Blues: Goodbye Saigon, Fuck Me to the Moon and especially The Tale of Iya.
